शकुनिरुवाच उपस्तीर्णा सभा राजन्रन्तुं चैते कृतक्षणाः अक्षानुप्त्वा देवनस्य समयोऽस्तु युधिष्ठिर
Śākuni said: "O king! The carpet has been spread out in the sabhā and these people have found the time. O Yudhiṣṭhira! The time for gambling and fixing the nature of the dice has come."
शकुनि ने कहा: "हे राजा! सभा में कालीन बिछा हुआ है और इन लोगों को समय मिल गया है। हे युधिष्ठिर! जुआ खेलने और पासों की प्रकृति को ठीक करने का समय आ गया है।"

युधिष्ठिर उवाच निकृतिर्देवनं पापं न क्षात्रोऽत्र पराक्रमः न च नीतिर्ध्रुवा राजन्किं त्वं द्यूतं प्रशंससि
Yudhiṣṭhira replied: "O king! Dishonest gambling is evil. There is no kṣatriya valour in that. Nor is there any good policy in it. Why do you then praise playing with the dice?
युधिष्ठिर ने उत्तर दिया: "हे राजा! बेईमान जुआ बुरा है। इसमें कोई क्षत्रिय वीरता नहीं है। न ही इसमें कोई अच्छी नीति है। फिर आप पासों से खेलने की प्रशंसा क्यों करते हैं?"

O Śākuni! The learned do not praise deceitful gambling. Like a cruel person, do not defeat us through a crooked path."
हे शकुनि! विद्वान लोग कपटपूर्ण जुए की प्रशंसा नहीं करते। क्रूर मनुष्य की भाँति टेढ़े मार्ग से हमें मत हराओ।”

शकुनिरुवाच योऽन्वेति संख्यां निकृतौ विधिज्ञ;श्चेष्टास्वखिन्नः कितवोऽक्षजासु महामतिर्यश्च जानाति द्यूतं; स वै सर्वं सहते प्रक्रियासु
Śākuni said: "He who knows the numbers and is knowledgeable about deceptions, is tireless in the art of gambling and is extremely intelligent in gambling, is the one who knows all the techniques. Through handling the dice, one can defeat the enemy.
शकुनि ने कहा: "वह जो संख्याओं को जानता है और धोखे के बारे में जानकार है, जुए की कला में अथक है और जुए में बेहद बुद्धिमान है, वह है जो सभी तकनीकों को जानता है। पासे को संभालने के माध्यम से, कोई दुश्मन को हरा सकता है।

अक्षग्लहः सोऽभिभवेत्परं न;स्तेनैव कालो भवतीदमात्थ दीव्यामहे पार्थिव मा विशङ्कां; कुरुष्व पाणं च चिरं च मा कृथाः
Blaming destiny is pointless. O king! Let us gamble and have no anxiety. Let us immediately decide on the stakes and not tarry."
भाग्य को दोष देना व्यर्थ है. हे राजा! आइए हम जुआ खेलें और कोई चिंता न करें। आइए हम तुरंत दांव पर निर्णय लें और देर न करें।"

युधिष्ठिर उवाच एवमाहायमसितो देवलो मुनिसत्तमः इमानि लोकद्वाराणि यो वै संचरते सदा
Yudhiṣṭhira replied: "Asita-Devala are supreme among sages and always frequents the doors of the worlds.
युधिष्ठिर ने उत्तर दिया: "असित-देवल ऋषियों में सर्वोच्च हैं और हमेशा संसार के द्वारों पर आते रहते हैं।
They have said that it is a sin to play with deceitful gamblers. It is best to win a battle through dharma, in which case, gambling is sanctioned.
उन्होंने कहा है कि धोखेबाज जुआरियों के साथ खेलना पाप है. धर्म के माध्यम से युद्ध जीतना सबसे अच्छा है, ऐसे में जुए को मंजूरी दी जाती है।

नार्या म्लेच्छन्ति भाषाभिर्मायया न चरन्त्युत अजिह्ममशठं युद्धमेतत्सत्पुरुषव्रतम्
Āryā-s do not use mleccha language, nor use deceit in behaviour. Men who are truthful in their vows do not use trickery in a battle.
आर्य म्लेच्छ भाषा का प्रयोग नहीं करते, न ही व्यवहार में छल का प्रयोग करते हैं। जो मनुष्य अपनी प्रतिज्ञा के प्रति सच्चे होते हैं, वे युद्ध में छल नहीं करते।
We have always sought to protect deserving brāhmana-s with our strength. O Śākuni! Do not play beyond those limits and do not win in excess.
हमने सदैव अपनी शक्ति से योग्य ब्राह्मणों की रक्षा करने का प्रयास किया है। हे शकुनि! उन सीमाओं से परे न खेलें और अधिक मात्रा में न जीतें।
I do not desire happiness and riches through deceit. But even if a gambler plays without deceit, gambling is never praised."
मैं छल से सुख और धन की कामना नहीं करता। परन्तु यदि कोई जुआरी बिना कपट के भी खेले तो भी जुए की कभी प्रशंसा नहीं की जाती।”

शकुनिरुवाच श्रोत्रियोऽश्रोत्रियमुत निकृत्यैव युधिष्ठिर विद्वानविदुषोऽभ्येति नाहुस्तां निकृतिं जनाः
Śākuni said: "O Yudhiṣṭhira! The learned triumph over non-learned only through trickery. That is how the wise triumph over the stupid, but people don't call it trickery.
शकुनि ने कहा: "हे युधिष्ठिर! विद्वान केवल छल के माध्यम से गैर-विद्वान पर विजय प्राप्त करता है। इसी प्रकार बुद्धिमान मूर्ख पर विजय प्राप्त करता है, लेकिन लोग इसे छल नहीं कहते हैं।"

एवं त्वं मामिहाभ्येत्य निकृतिं यदि मन्यसे देवनाद्विनिवर्तस्व यदि ते विद्यते भयम्
In approaching me for the game, if you think that I will resort to trickery, if that is your fear, then refrain from the game."
खेल के लिए मुझसे संपर्क करते समय, यदि तुम्हें लगता है कि मैं चालाकी का सहारा लूँगा, यदि यही तुम्हारा भय है, तो खेल से दूर रहो।"

युधिष्ठिर उवाच आहूतो न निवर्तेयमिति मे व्रतमाहितम् विधिश्च बलवान्राजन्दिष्टस्यास्मि वशे स्थितः
Yudhiṣṭhira replied: "O king! Once challenged, I will not withdraw. That is the vow I have taken. Fate is the powerful one and we are in the power of destiny.
युधिष्ठिर ने उत्तर दिया: "हे राजा! एक बार चुनौती देने के बाद, मैं पीछे नहीं हटूंगा। मैंने यही प्रतिज्ञा ली है। भाग्य शक्तिशाली है और हम भाग्य की शक्ति में हैं।
Who in this assembly will I play with? What is the counter-stake? Let the gambling begin."
इस सभा में मैं किसके साथ खेलूँगा? जवाबी हिस्सेदारी क्या है? चलो जुआ शुरू करें।"
Duryodhana said: "O lord of the earth! I will stake all my jewels and my riches. My maternal uncle, Śākuni, will gamble on my behalf."
दुर्योधन ने कहा: "हे पृथ्वी के स्वामी! मैं अपने सारे गहने और धन दांव पर लगा दूंगा। मेरे मामा शकुनि मेरी ओर से जुआ खेलेंगे।"
Yudhiṣṭhira replied: "To me, it seems unfair that one man should gamble in another's place. O learned one! You know this. However, if that is what you want, so be it."
युधिष्ठिर ने उत्तर दिया: "मेरे लिए, यह अनुचित लगता है कि एक व्यक्ति दूसरे के स्थान पर जुआ खेले। हे विद्वान! आप यह जानते हैं। हालाँकि, यदि आप यही चाहते हैं, तो ऐसा ही होगा।"

वैशंपायन उवाच उपोह्यमाने द्यूते तु राजानः सर्व एव ते धृतराष्ट्रं पुरस्कृत्य विविशुस्तां सभां ततः
Vaiśampāyana said: When arrangements had been made for the gambling, all the kings, with Dhṛtarāṣṭra at the forefront, entered the sabhā —
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: जब जुए की व्यवस्था हो गई, तो धृतराष्ट्र को सबसे आगे लेकर सभी राजा सभा में आए -

भीष्मो द्रोणः कृपश्चैव विदुरश्च महामतिः नातीवप्रीतमनसस्तेऽन्ववर्तन्त भारत
Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Kṛpa, the immensely intelligent Vidūra. O descendant of the Bhārata lineage! Others also followed, not at all pleased in their minds.
भीष्म, द्रोण, कृप, अत्यंत बुद्धिमान विदुर। हे भरत वंश के वंशज! अन्य लोगों ने भी उनका अनुसरण किया, जो उनके मन में बिल्कुल भी प्रसन्न नहीं थे।

ते द्वंद्वशः पृथक्चैव सिंहग्रीवा महौजसः सिंहासनानि भूरीणि विचित्राणि च भेजिरे
Those immensely energetic ones, with necks like those of lions, sat separately and together, on many colourful seats.
वे अत्यंत ऊर्जावान, सिंहों जैसी गर्दन वाले, अनेक रंगीन आसनों पर अलग-अलग और एक साथ बैठे थे।
O king! With the assembled kings, that sabhā was radiant, like resplendent heaven when the gods have assembled.
हे राजा! एकत्रित राजाओं के साथ वह सभा देदीप्यमान थी, जैसे देवताओं के एकत्रित होने पर देदीप्यमान स्वर्ग हो।
O great king! They were all brave warriors, learned in the Veda-s and their forms were like that of the sun. Then the gambling between the well-wishers started.
हे महान राजा! वे सभी वीर योद्धा थे, वेदों के विद्वान थे और उनका रूप सूर्य के समान था। फिर शुभचिंतकों के बीच जुआ शुरू हो गया.
Yudhiṣṭhira said: "O king! This is a beautiful chain of gems, inlaid in supreme gold. It represents a lot of riches and has been procured from the whirl of the ocean.
युधिष्ठिर ने कहा: "हे राजा! यह सर्वोच्च सोने से जड़ित रत्नों की एक सुंदर श्रृंखला है। यह बहुत सारे धन का प्रतिनिधित्व करती है और इसे समुद्र के भंवर से प्राप्त किया गया है।
O king! This is my stake. What is your counter-stake? Let it be placed in the proper order and I will win this gamble."
हे राजा! यह मेरी हिस्सेदारी है. आपका जवाबी दांव क्या है? इसे उचित क्रम में रखा जाए और मैं यह जुआ जीत जाऊंगा।"
Sabhaparvan · v24
दुर्योधन उवाच सन्ति मे मणयश्चैव धनानि विविधानि च मत्सरश्च न मेऽर्थेषु जयाम्येनं दुरोदरम्
Duryodhana replied: "I also possess many gems and riches. But they serve no particular end for me. I will win this gamble."
दुर्योधन ने उत्तर दिया: "मेरे पास भी बहुत सारे रत्न और धन हैं। लेकिन वे मेरे लिए कोई खास काम नहीं आते। मैं यह जुआ जीतूंगा।"
Vaiśampāyana said: Then Śākuni, who knew the heart of the dice, grasped the dice. And Śākuni told Yudhiṣṭhira, "I have won."
वैशम्पायन ने कहा: तब शकुनि, जो पासे के मर्म को जानता था, ने पासे को पकड़ लिया। और शकुनि ने युधिष्ठिर से कहा, "मैं जीत गया हूं।"
